*Written on Skin*, with a libretto by the prominent British playwright Martin Crimp and music by George Benjamin, premiered at the 2012 Aix-en-Provence Festival to great acclaim and has since become a popular production, staged repeatedly in theaters across Europe. A violent guardian orders a boy to write a book full of enlightenment—depicting the human lifespan, the exploits of angels, sinners burning in the fires of hell, and families in heaven—and the enigmatic boy begins to live in the guardian’s home. The boy’s arrival awakens Agnès, the guardian’s young wife, who has been under his control, leading to a shocking and tragic ending. Directed by Katie Mitchell, who is highly acclaimed in the British theater world, this production brings the dark and tense libretto to life in an original staging, masterfully intertwining the past and present elements found within the opera. Benjamin himself conducts. A co-production with the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Netherlands Opera, and the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse.
