Cherubini/Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 A fascinating video recording featuring Cherubini in his prime has been released. Cherubini’s Bruckner from this period features standard tempos; in the performance he conducted with the RAI Symphony Orchestra of Turin on May 2, 1969—which was previously released on an Italian CD (is this the same source as this DVD?) , the total running time was approximately 58 minutes—a tempo so different from that of the Munich Philharmonic recording 22 years later (approximately 77 minutes) that it sounds like a completely different conductor. The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra recording (DG) from five years later also has a total running time of about 59 minutes, which is almost identical to the Turin recording, but Cherubini’s Bruckner Symphony No. 9, however, began to run in the mid-60-minute range in the 1980s, exceeded 70 minutes in the 1990s, and by the year before his death, took nearly 77 minutes.
