A chamber opera that premiered at La Fenice in Venice in 1954. Based on Henry James’s strange and mysterious Gothic horror-style novel, the work incorporates Britten’s unique perspective and ideas. While considered a musical masterpiece, the complexity of the story—with its distinctive atmosphere—has made it difficult to stage or adapt for film; aside from a previous film version, until now, there has been only one live DVD of a stage production directed by Hampe. This time, it is a “drama adaptation” produced by BBC Television, directed by television director Katie Mitchell. The conductor is Hickox, who has been regularly recording Britten operas for the Chandos label. For Hickox, now regarded as a specialist in Britten’s operas, this marks his first recording of *The Turn of the Screw*. Also worth noting is the casting of Mark Padmore—who has previously distinguished himself in the early music field—as the Ghost Quint.
