[With Oropesa and Acmetina in the dual queen roles—Donizetti’s masterpiece historical opera Maria Stuarda comes to the Royal Theater of Madrid!] Maria Stuarda (1835) is one of the “Tudor Queens Trilogy,” alongside Anna Bolena (1830) and Roberto Devereux (1837), all composed by Donizetti during the golden age of his career. This masterpiece of historical opera cemented the composer’s reputation through his masterful use of dramatic expression—often described as a precursor to Verdi—and his technically sophisticated bel canto vocal style. Based on Schiller’s play, the libretto weaves a tense drama centered on the power struggle between Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, and Elizabeth, Queen of England, intertwined with a love triangle involving the loyal Earl of Leicester. The standout performers are Reset Oropesa, who sings the dignified role of Maria with a lyrical, beautiful voice, and Aigul Akmetina, who portrays the expressive role of Elisabetta with dramatic singing that flares with the flames of jealousy while occasionally revealing a hint of pity for her rival in love. The confrontation scene between the two queens is the most nail-biting highlight of this production. Ismael Jordi, with his resonant tenor voice, elegantly portrays the Earl of Leicester, who suffers as he is caught between the two queens’ love. A talented supporting cast, including Roberto Taliavini (as Talbot) and Andrei Filontsik (as Lord Cecil), vividly brings out the musical and dramatic contrasts. Directed by British master David McVicar, the production features an elegant set that beautifully recreates the historical setting. The orchestra and chorus, led by José Miguel Pérez-Sierra, powerfully support this grand drama with vibrant music. Naxos Japan
