The Brockes Passion - Dramatic adaptation of Handel's Passion! Bertolt Heinrich Brockes, a Hamburg-based politician and diplomat in the early 18th century, wrote the script of the Passion of Christ with a focus on the Bible and his own characters (including "Daughter of Zion" and "Believing Soul"). The text was competitively composed by the most eminent composers of the late German Baroque period, including Joachim Kaiser, Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann Mattheson, and others. Handel, a friend of Brockes since his student days in Halle, was one of these composers. However, unlike the typical Passion style of the Baroque period, Handel created this work as an oratorio, which later became his specialty genre. In this video, the story of the libretto is visualized as a pop contemporary drama by director Walter Sutcliffe, artistic director of the Halle Opera House from the 2021/22 season, at the Handel Festival in the composer's native Halle in 2023.Under the dynamic direction of Michael Hofstetter, whose repertoire ranges from baroque to modern opera, the singers, including Robert Therier as the evangelist and Vanessa Waldehardt as the daughter of Zion, and the chorus, which participates in the drama as a crowd, vividly portray Handel's Passion Play.
