Orol, the goddess of dawn, and Titon, the shepherd, are deeply in love. Titon, being human, is tormented by the fear that one day Orol might fall in love with another god. Aeol, the god of the wind, who also loves Orol, asks Palas, the goddess of herding, to kill Titon, whom he considers a nuisance. However, since Pales secretly loves Titon, she promises Aeolus that she will not kill him, but instead kidnap him. Overcome with grief at the loss of Titon, Orol rejects Aeolus’s advances and vows to spend the rest of her life mourning Titon’s death—but… Mondonville was a composer of the French Baroque period. While active as a violinist at the French court, he gained popularity that rivaled even Rameau—the most renowned composer of choral music and opera at the time. In particular, *Tithonus and Orol*, which premiered in 1753, was met with great acclaim. After Rameau’s retirement, when the “Buffon Controversy”—a debate over the superiority of Italian versus French opera—flared up again, the defenders of French opera promoted this work as their trump card to prove the superiority of their camp. In the video recording of this production, performed without an audience at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in January 2021, the audience is captivated by the fantastical scenes created by the comical movements of the puppets (clay figures and flocks of sheep), the dazzling costumes, and the beautiful set design. Against this backdrop, guided by the free-spirited baton of William Christie, who leads Les Arts Florissants, outstanding singers and dancers deliver magnificent performances both vocally and dramatically. The role of Tytone is sung by Belgian-born Reinout van Mehelen. Known as a master of the “haut contre” register—a particularly high vocal range among tenors—his youthful and lustrous voice, combined with the vivid singing of soprano Gwendlyn Blondel as Orol, captivates the audience.
