Description:

Antonacci, Gardiner, and Noble’s *Carmen*: A Return to the Original Form of This Masterpiece Opera *Carmen* is a masterpiece that epitomizes French opera. When it premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1875, its raw depiction of the lower classes and its tragic ending shocked the audience and the production was panned; shortly thereafter, a disheartened Bizet passed away at the young age of 36. However, thanks to its accessible yet dramatically powerful music—and the success of its adaptation into the grand opera style by Bizet’s friend Giraud—this work has since become one of the most popular operas performed worldwide. This video is a valuable recording of a performance staged in June 2009 on the initiative of the Opéra-Comique in Paris—the venue of *Carmen*’s premiere—as an attempt to explore the original form of *Carmen* as an *opéra-comique* (a sung play with spoken dialogue), as conceived by Bizet. Conducting the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique is John Eliot Gardiner, who has built a distinguished reputation for restoring Romantic-era music—beginning with Beethoven—to its original form. The production is directed by the masterful Adrian Noble, who served for many years as Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. The music and staging created by this formidable duo feature Anna Caterina Antonacci, one of the finest Carmen singers of our time; Andrew Richards as the fiercely spirited José; Anne-Catherine Gillet as the innocent Micaëla, and Nicola Cavallier as the manly bullfighter Escamillo—all deliver performances rich in nuance, perfectly suited to this operatic drama.
