The first volume in a series of chamber music collections that sheds light on the lesser-known masterpieces of Josef Marx, a leading figure in the Austrian music scene of the first half of the 20th century. It features cello pieces written in 1913–14 and the “Violin Sonata No. 2,” completed in 1944, just before he ceased composing. Marx, who was exposed to music from the age of three and later became an accomplished pianist and professor, created music characterized by a unique lyricism woven from intricate polyphony and bold, late-Romantic and Impressionist-style harmonies. The “Suite,” with a running time of 35 minutes, was composed around the time World War I began, yet its straightforward melodies and bright tone make it feel as if one has been transported back to the Early Romantic period. “Pastorale” is also an idyllic, lyrical, and accessible little piece. Although the Violin Sonata No. 2 was composed toward the end of World War II, it lacks any pessimistic or tragic atmosphere; the first movement, which at times brings to mind Brahms’s violin sonatas, the second movement, titled “In the Tone of a Serenade,” and the third movement, which offers brilliant performance effects such as double stops and perpetual motion-style phrases.
