Marta Ptasinska is a composer and percussionist from Warsaw who studied in Poland, France, and the United States under Lutoslawski, Boulanger, and Messiaen. His percussion works and operas, including the marimba concerto and "The Voice of the Wind," are highly acclaimed and have been commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, and other performers around the world. Since 1998, he has been teaching at the University of Chicago. The recording "Winter's Tale" is a chamber orchestral work that was premiered in Lisbon in 1985. It is a fantastical music inspired not by Shakespeare but by Surrealist paintings. While incorporating elements of Vivaldi's "Winter," the piece creates a unique acoustic world in which dreams and reality intersect. Other works include "Concerto for Ensemble," composed to celebrate Yehudi Menuhin's 80th birthday; "Mancala," derived from the ancient Egyptian game of numbers; "Double Concerto for Flute and Harp," premiered at the 2008 International Harp Festival; and the serene "Euridice's Dream," with its serene atmosphere, stillness and movement, SE-TA" with two contrasting movements.
