Description:
Brahms' horn trio was completed in 1865. Although this is Brahms' only chamber work with horn, he seems to have had a thorough knowledge of the instrument, having learned the natural horn from his father at an early age. The English composer Lennox Berkley, who first focused on this form in the 20th century, commissioned this piece from a pianist friend of his. Commissioned by a pianist friend of his, Berkley wrote the Trio, a brilliant work with original phrases and a tight ensemble. The final movement is an ingenious variation. The Horn Trio by Leshnoff, which is very popular in the U.S. today, was influenced not only by Brahms but also by Beethoven, whom he admired. Based on the motto, "From Darkness to Light," the music begins with the rich melody of the violin and transforms into a joyful, rhythmic music as the three instruments engage in an intimate dialogue.David Cooper, principal horn player of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Kerr, a violinist who has served as concert master of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and Oraion Weiss, a pianist who has performed with numerous orchestras in the United States and elsewhere.
