Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade seems to have been relocated to medieval England in this dramatic new work. Composer Nigel Clarke was born in England and is now based in Brussels. He is popular for his brass band works with a contemporary musical language. This "Merlin's Prophecy," billed as a "symphony with violins," is a symphonic suite-like work in which the solo violin is active throughout. The violin is played by Merlin, the prophet and sorcerer from the "History of the Britannian Kings" written by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century, and the five movements depict scenes in which Merlin appears, ranging from stormy intensity to mysterious and meditative expressions set in forests and on the sea, as well as the work's originator, the The virtuoso Peter Shepherd Scaves plays it in all directions, and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Neil Thomson, provides dynamic support.
