The album title "Raizes" means "Roots" in Portuguese. The works on this album are all new pieces commissioned by the Matozinhoš String Quartet, and are inspired by traditional Portuguese folk melodies, dances, and stories. Kalapatoso's "Lasos, contredanses y descante" and Lapa's "Miranda Suite," both based on dances and stories from northern Portugal, alternate between slow, melancholy melodies and light dances. Marquez's "Island of Happiness," with its delightful, somewhat modern harmonies, has its roots in the mythology of the Azores and Madeira, while Azevedo's "Poplarskia I" is dedicated to the memory of Lopes-Grasa and Berra Bartók, who are known for their work in folk music.
