Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto is one of the most representative "works for violin and orchestra" of 19th century Russia, but other Russian composers also wrote many excellent concerto works. This album features works by Tchaikovsky's pupil Sergei Taneyev and Rimsky-Korsakov, one of the "Russian Five," performed by Yablonsky and the Kiev Virtuosi Symphony Orchestra. Taneyev's "Concerto Suites" were written at the request of his friend, violinist Sibor, in the style of Baroque suites, but each piece is written in bold strokes. The lovely "Gavotte" is charming. Rimsky=Korsakov's "Fantasy on Two Russian Themes" is also known as Kreisler's version with piano accompaniment, but the powerful orchestral version is a must-hear. The melancholy Russian melody sung by the violin blends with the colorful sounds of the orchestral part to create a magnificent climax. Naxos Japan
