The contemporary Ukrainian composer Shchetynsky (b. 1960) continues to compose music imbued with a radiant and sublime spirituality. His musical ideas are by no means obscure; rather, they speak directly to the listener’s consciousness. Old and new Orthodox chants, nostalgic Ukrainian melodies, Gregorian chant, melodies from Baroque and 19th-century operas, and the avant-garde sounds of the 20th century—all interweave flexibly to create a new sense of unity.
