In Italian opera, the soprano is usually assigned to the role of the single-minded and lovely protagonist, while the mezzo-soprano plays a supporting role such as maid of honor, nanny, or friend who helps (or traps) the protagonist. Contraltos often play male roles, adding a perverse allure to the stage. Rossini, however, loved this deep, lyrical voice and gave it the lead in "The Barber of Seville" and "Cenerentola," as well as other important roles in other operas, making full use of this deep voice. In French opera, mezzo-sopranos often sing the leading roles, as in Saint-Saens' "Samson and Delilah" and many other operas by Massenet. Bizet's "Carmen," which requires an intense and bewitching quality, is also the sole domain of mezzo-sopranos. This album is full of the charm of the female voice, which combines warmth and intensity.
