The oboe is said to have originated from a vertical flute played by Marsyas—a half-human, half-beast spirit from ancient Greek legend—which underwent various improvements before emerging around the 17th century. It is also considered the first instrument to be included in an orchestra previously composed solely of string instruments. It was particularly beloved by Italian composers during the Baroque period, giving rise to numerous masterpieces that fully harnessed the instrument’s expressive power.
