Born in Budapest, Vejner studied with Kessler at the Royal Conservatory of Music, and as a pedagogue, the composer had a great influence on the Hungarian music world for half a century. The works written in the early years of his career received international acclaim for their unique sound, combining German and French romanticism with Hungarian diction. The chamber music with piano included in this album is a group of his most highly acclaimed and beloved works. The Violin Sonata No. 1 was first performed in 1912. It begins with a lyrical fantasy-like first movement, followed by a light scherzo, a deeply meditative slow movement, and a grand finale rich in motivic transformations. Weinel later arranged this work as a violin concerto (8.574707). No. 2 was premiered in 1917. It is characterized by dramatic and dark language that reflects the shadows of wartime. It is a densely expressive work consisting of a tense first movement in classical sonata form, a vivid scherzo that has been described as magical, a slow movement in the French impressionist style, and a finale with an improvisatory introduction. Other works include the Ballade, which is full of nobility and poetic depth, and the Romance, with its slow cello melody.The violin will be played by 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition winner Julia Puschkel.
