Auber, one of the leading opera composers of 19th-century France, had a profound influence on Romantic comic opera with his elegant melodies and lively rhythms. The overture to *The Black Domino*, which weaves in melodies from the opera’s duets and Spanish-style dances and features a striking, abrupt modulation in the finale; the simple mazurka and graceful waltz from the ballet *The Gypsy Girl*, adapted from his earlier works for a renowned dancer; and the *The Water Nymph* Overture, featuring a beautiful cello melody and lively woodwind motifs. From the grand work *Gustave III, or The Masked Ball*—later known for being beloved by Verdi—we present the overture, which foreshadows the work’s profound drama, and its dazzling ballet music. The Funeral March, written in 1840 for the ceremony welcoming Napoleon’s remains to the Invalides in Paris, features a heart-wrenching opening, followed by the solemn march of the brass section, and a passage around the midpoint that seems to recall past glory—all of which showcase the masterful skill of a composer who fully understood dramatic effect.
