This album features key piano works from both the early and late periods of Smetana, known as the “Father of Czech Music.” Smetana, who excelled at playing the violin and piano from a young age, gave his first piano recital at the age of six, and it is said that he was profoundly influenced after attending a Liszt recital in Prague. Smetana’s only piano sonata was written during a period when he was seriously re-learning composition; it is a Western-oriented work that reveals the influence of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt, which he absorbed through his teachers. With a running time of about 30 minutes, it weaves together passionate expression and remarkable virtuosity. In contrast, the “Sammlung tschechischer Tänze” (Collection of Czech Dances), written around the time he was finalizing “My Homeland,” prominently features national character. In the first collection, he aimed to elevate the polka to an artistic level comparable to Chopin’s mazurkas; in the second collection, he incorporated a wide variety of dance styles, including old folk songs and dance steps he learned from an amateur violinist living in his neighborhood, in addition to the published collection of Czech folk songs. Hwang Bo-gan, a rising star from South Korea, studied at Seoul National University before continuing his education at the Colburn School of Music.
