In the works related to the choral piece “Prometheus,” the powerful arrangements of his early period evolve into a more introspective tone in the “Pastorale” composed a decade later. The 1883 arrangement of the same piece achieves even greater depth. The student song “Let Us Rejoice” and the “Heroic March” feature relatively brilliant musical styles. In contrast, the “Three Chansons” and arrangements of Weber’s works stand out for their lyrical intimacy, while religious and contemplative miniatures—such as Rossini’s “Divine Love” and “To the Artist,” which utilizes the melody of a choral piece based on Schiller’s late poetry—reach a state of profound depth and tranquility that touches the heart. Performer Michael Keikoff approached each piece by interpreting it as a “self-contained, complete drama.” While Liszt sometimes spent decades refining the same melody, Keikoff plays as if carefully tracing the traces of those changes; every performance is filled with profound conviction, right through to the quiet pieces of his later years, stripped of all artifice.
