The oratorio *Giuseppe*, composed by Johann Simon Mayr in 1829 for a concert at the Bergamo Conservatory, is a three-act work based on the story of Joseph from the Old Testament. The inspiration for this work was Étienne Méhul’s biblical opera *Joseph* (1807), which was widely popular at the time. While Meyure’s work features a restrained style centered on prayers and hymns, Meyr added a significant number of dramatic arias and duets, transforming it into the style of a lavish Italian opera. Furthermore, the work employs the “pastiche” technique—quoting melodies from Rossini and Bellini, as well as his beloved pupil Donizetti—unfolding a diverse and brilliant musical world perfectly suited for students to showcase their skills.
