NAXOS' popular "History of Russian Piano Trios" series. From now on, we will focus on the "Silver Age" and the "Art Nouveau" period. The program opens with Rachmaninoff's two Sorrowful Trios. Both were written by Rachmaninoff while he was a student at the Moscow Conservatory. The beautiful theme of No. 1 turns into a funeral march in the epilogue, and symbols of suffering and death are woven throughout No. 2, which was written after the news of Tchaikovsky's death, and incorporates Rachmaninoff's favorite "Day of Wrath" motif and bell tones, with the passus duriusculus (descending chromatic scale ) is repeated as a symbol of death. In the final section, the Orthodox liturgical melody "Rest in peace to the saints" echoes, suggesting the relentless flow of time. The Brahms Trio is one of Russia's leading chamber music ensembles, founded in 1990. Influenced by Tatiana Gaudamovich and Rudolf Barshai, its members are professors at the Moscow Conservatory.
