Robert Volkmann was born in Ronmutsch, Saxony, and received his musical education under his father, a choirmaster. He then honed his skills in Leipzig, establishing his musical foundation. He was scarcely known as a composer until his move to Hungary in the early 1840s, when his Piano Trio, Op. 5, drew acclaim from Liszt, Baur, and Wagner, propelling him into the spotlight. His music straddles the boundary between radical and conservative approaches, encompassing diverse styles ranging from fantastical works influenced by Schumann and Mendelssohn to pieces valuing classical equilibrium in the tradition of Beethoven and Schubert. This recording features works pulsing with dynamic rhythms and rich expressiveness, ranging from the poetic "Fantastic Pictures" and the tightly structured "Piano Sonata in C minor" to the cimbalom-like effects in "Hungarian Song" and the simple charm of "Grandmother's Song." Levon Avagyan is an Armenian pianist. He gained attention by winning the 2017 Maria Canals International Piano Competition.
