Description:
Naxos' "Brazilian Music" series is a project introduced as part of the "Brasil em Concerto" initiative led by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It focuses on presenting works that are significant in Brazilian music history yet remain unrecorded. Its major distinctive feature lies in simultaneously advancing systematic recordings—including world premiere recordings—of orchestral, chamber, and vocal works, alongside new musicological research-based score editing and publication. Enrique Oswaldo was born in Rio de Janeiro and raised in a multicultural environment. At age 16, he traveled to Italy, studying composition and piano in Florence, where he established a refined musical language. He also absorbed French and German musical cultures, earning him the description as "the most European of Brazilian composers." After returning to Brazil in 1903, he made significant contributions to education as director and professor at the National Conservatory of Music, earning high acclaim for works employing formal beauty and skillful orchestration. "Elegia" is a short piece, lasting about five minutes, featuring a melancholic, song-like melody reminiscent of an intermezzo from a verismo opera. It was conceived for his son who had begun playing the cello, but was later dedicated to a deceased friend.Alongside "Elegia," the "Sinfonietta" is a work from his Florentine period, consisting of four movements with a performance time of just over 25 minutes. Both its musical ideas and structure are bright and sunny, sharing a spirit akin to the neo-classical works of Respighi and others. The "Symphony" is a major work lasting 39 minutes, prominently featuring classical structure through bright musical ideas and refined orchestration, giving a strong Italian impression. The refreshing lyricism of the slow movement and the brilliant climax in the finale are particularly effective. Although composed during his Brazilian period, the work displays little ethnic color and no avant-garde elements. This likely contributed to its later obscurity within the Brazilian music scene. However, viewed with the passage of time, it proves fascinating as a symphony by a figure active in the Italian music world alongside contemporaries like Leoncavallo and Martucci. Above all, it is an accessible and charming work that promises great enjoyment. Naxos Japan
