Description:

Naxos’s “Music of Brazil” series is a project—part of the “Brasil em Concerto” initiative led by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs—that focuses on introducing works that are significant in the history of Brazilian music but have not yet been recorded. This album features works by Brazilian composer José Antonio de Almeida Prado, who was active from the late 20th century through the early 21st century. Prado was born in 1943. He began his career as a composer by studying neoclassicism and traditional folk music under Camargo Guarnieri, and in the late 1960s, he became deeply immersed in avant-garde music. In 1969, after winning first prize at the Guanabara Music Festival, he moved to France, where he studied under Olivier Messiaen and Nadia Boulanger. After returning to Japan, he taught at a university while developing his own unique theory, leaving behind a large body of work until his death in 2010. His music is characterized by a distinct individuality that is instantly recognizable, even as it incorporates a diverse range of compositional techniques. His early work, the “Fontainebleau Trio,” reflects his impressions from his time studying abroad under Nadia Boulanger, while his 1985 “Ballade” fully expresses the beautiful resonance and original layering of sounds characteristic of his mature period. Also included are the “Trio of the Sea,” dedicated to the memory of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, and the expressive “Cello Sonata,” commissioned by Sonia Rubinsky and António Menezes. The performers include Emanuele Baldini, concertmaster of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and the artist behind numerous recordings in the “Brazilian Music” series, Sonia Rubinsky, who has earned high praise for her recordings of Villa-Lobos’s piano works; and Rafael Cesário, who served as guest principal soloist with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and has since established himself as a soloist and chamber musician.
