[The first volume of the project to record the complete religious choral works of Mendelssohn, performed by the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Christoph Poppen, is now available] Poppen and the Cologne Chamber Orchestra—whose series of Mozart Mass recordings on the NAXOS label were highly acclaimed for their meticulous and vibrant performances—have begun a complete recording of Mendelssohn’s sacred choral works. Volume 1 features Psalm 42—which the composer himself considered his masterpiece and which Schumann also praised highly—as well as Psalm 95 and the late Psalm 98, as well as a collection of chorale cantatas based on Lutheran chorales, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the essence of Mendelssohn’s sacred music, filled with deep prayer and joy. In addition to the outstanding ensemble performance by the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and the West German Radio Choir of Cologne, the participation of a stellar lineup of soloists—led by soprano Juliane Banse—adds significant appeal. While Mendelssohn is best known for his instrumental works, such as symphonies and songs without words, he was an extremely important figure in German Protestant music—as evidenced by his revival of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and his own extensive body of oratorios and psalm settings.
