Along with Villa-Lobos and Mignone, Lorenzo Fernández is an innovator of Brazilian music, known for his diverse style that incorporates rhythms and sounds unique to Brazil, while being influenced by Beethoven, Debussy, and Wagner. His works cover a wide range of genres, including symphonies, operas, piano pieces, and chamber music, and as an educator, he was instrumental in establishing the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. His piano music is descriptive and short, and includes many pieces for children. The "Brazilian Suites" Nos. 1-3 are masterpieces that combine folk elements and original themes with rich sounds and melodies. No. 1 develops from a rural atmosphere into an urban serenade, while No. 2's final piece, "Caterete," shows the vitality of folk dances. The third piece becomes more complex and mysterious, and the powerful rhythm of the "jongo," which is of African origin, creates a sense of exuberance. In the "Three Exercises in Sonatina Form," a masterpiece, the influence of the shawlo, modulation, and percussion techniques can be seen, and in the "Out-of-town Waltz," the polyphony pays homage to Bach. The Sonata Breve, Fernández's last solo piano work in three movements, is a concise yet experimental work that demands a high level of technical skill from the performer.The early works "Dream" and "Prelude at Dusk," with their impressionist-style colorful sound worlds, are also worth listening to. Performing with nuance is London-based Brazilian pianist Cleria Ilsun, who has performed with Nelson Freire and others. She has performed with Nelson Freire and others, and her works have been dedicated by Mignone and Nobre, and she is active internationally. Naxos Japan
