Ronaldo Miranda was born in Rio de Janeiro. He studied at the Conservatory of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he studied composition with Enrique Morelenbaum and piano with Dulce Ji Saurez, and won the first prize at the 2nd Biennial of Contemporary Music in Brazil in 1977, the first prize at the International Composition Competition in Budapest in 1986, the Carlos He has received many awards, including the Carlos Gomez Prize in 2001, and is a highly acclaimed composer in Brazil and abroad. The Piano Concerto, commissioned by the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, is a technical work consisting of an atonal first movement with sharp Bartók-style rhythms, a second movement with a beautiful contrast between strings and piano modeled after the slow movement of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, and a final movement written in theme and variation form. The Piano Concertino is a small-scale work with an energetic first movement with frequent tempo changes and a second movement with a Piazzolla-like melody. The other two pieces are "Horizon," about Christopher Columbus' voyage to the New World, and "Beethoven Revisited," an inventive arrangement of Beethoven's most famous motifs and themes. Naxos Japan
