Description:
French composer Albert Roussel is best known for his symphonies and ballets such as "The Feast of the Spider," but he also wrote brilliant, if rarely heard, chamber works. Roussel served in the Navy for about five years as a young man, and after leaving the service, he studied music seriously and made his debut as a composer in 1902, discarding most of his works from the 1890s and cataloging his post-debut works, so the violin sonatas he had already written were discarded, and the The sonata from 1907-08 became the first. It is a beautiful work with a romantic musical theme. The second sonata is from 1924. It is a compact work of about 15 minutes, almost atonal but with a slightly oriental sound. The last string trio was Roussel's last completed work in 1937. It is performed by an ensemble led by violinist David Bowlin, winner of the 2003 Washington International Competition and currently teaching at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Naxos Japan
