Enriqui Auvis de Mezquita was one of the pioneers of Brazilian music, who, influenced by French and Italian music, left behind a wide range of genres, from religious music and opera to instrumental music. Born into a poor black family in Rio, he showed his talent in a discriminatory social structure and was highly acclaimed at the Conservatory at a young age. 1857, he was the first recipient of the newly established "Travel Abroad Prize" given to outstanding students, and had the opportunity to study in Paris, but was imprisoned for three years for disrespect and returned home in 1866 with a broken heart In 1866, he returned to Japan with a broken heart. While continuing his activities as a church organist and conservatory professor in Rio de Janeiro, he gained popularity for his light music such as operettas and magica (a type of music drama), freely handling a variety of forms such as tango, polka, quadrille, and waltz. Piano music born of stage music spread as home music, and numerous works became hits, including the tango from "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," considered an early example of tango brasileiro. This diverse body of works with lively rhythms and local color contributed greatly to the formation of Brazilian popular music in the latter half of the 19th century.
