S162e(1877)(early version) Performer Sergio Gallo (Piano) Recorded: December 12-14, 2023 at Hahn Hall, Music Academy of the West,Santa Barbara, CA(USA) Total recording time: 69 min. NAXOS's Liszt: The Complete Piano Works, Vol. 64 includes a different manuscript of the third year of the Pilgrimage and works from the 1830s. The opening "Romantic Fantasy on Two Swiss Melodies" is a work that was unusually never revised for Liszt. In the introduction, the "bullhorn" motif of the alphorn and the theme of a Swiss folk song are presented, and the "nostalgia" melody of the first year of the pilgrim's year also appears in this large-scale piece. The next piece, "Paralipomnes of the Divine Comedy," is the first edition of the "Symphonic Fantasy for Piano" of 1839. It was revised and developed into "Reading Dante" in the second year of the Pilgrimage to Italy. The first edition has longer counterpoint episodes and the chorale theme also plays an important role. The following "Adagio" also uses material from the second chorale of this piece. The Third Year of the Pilgrimage is a collection of pieces written from the 1860s to about 1877, and it shows little of the brilliant pianism of his youth, including the influence of the religious music to which he turned in his later years, dissonance, and ambiguous tonal sensibilities. All five works from this collection are in the process of being revised; two versions of the "Guardian Angel" are considerably shorter than the current version, and Liszt seems to have added more material with each revision. This shows the trial-and-error process that Liszt went through in completing his works during this period. Sergio Gallo is a technical pianist from Brazil. He specializes in Romantic and Brazilian works. (Naxos Japan)
