Description:
Erich Jacques Wolff was a Jewish composer born in Vienna. He was a close friend of Schoenberg and Zemlinsky, and wrote at least 168 songs before his death at the young age of 38, all of which were published and highly acclaimed during his lifetime, but are rarely performed today. The pieces on this album were composed during the last decade of his life. We hear a variety of works, including the bright and charming "Richard Demel's Four Children's Songs," a series of songs for children, and the somber "Cemetery Songs," which are sometimes boldly progressive in harmony. Although there are occasional bold harmonic progressions, they do not venture into atonality and retain a romantic flavor. The piano part is written in a highly technical manner and has a strong presence while complementing the singing. The Austrian mezzo-soprano Ida Aldrian sings, and is skillfully accompanied by Klaus Zimon, who provides detailed commentary (in German and English) in the booklet of this release. Naxos Japan
