Description:

William Shield was a composer and violinist from County Durham in northern England. After learning violin from his father, he worked as an apprentice in a shipyard before studying under Charles Avison, emerging as a prominent performer. He eventually moved to London, becoming concertmaster of the Royal Opera House Orchestra at Covent Garden in 1773. In 1782, he became the theatre's resident composer, premiering his major work Rosina and deepening his friendship with Haydn. In his later years, he published chamber music and treatises, and in 1817 was appointed King's Music Master. His Violin Duets, published in the late 1770s, were his breakthrough work and cemented his reputation as a composer. Although no autograph manuscripts of either collection survive, the first editions are preserved at the British Library in London. Both consist of six pieces, each in two movements. Opus 1 is characterized by Italianate elegance and the equal treatment of both parts, with naturalistic depictions and folk elements woven throughout. The second work is described as "composed in a simple style for learners." It condenses a variety of forms, including singing melodies, variations, rondos, and canons, into a more concise style of writing, and also uses drone accompaniment reminiscent of melodies from the hurdy-gurdy and northern bagpipes. The performance is by two musicians from the Dorrit Ensemble. Naxos Japan
