The new recording by Dario Salvi, who has won fans with his NAXOS series of Aubert overtures, is by Franz von Suppé, music for the play "Mozart" by Leonhard Wohlmuth, which was performed at the Theater an der Wien in 1854. The story of the play is about Mozart's life and the people involved in it. The overture begins with music from "The Marriage of Figaro," which is followed a minute or so later by music from "Don Giovanni. The overture opens with music from "The Marriage of Figaro," followed a minute or so later by music from "Don Giovanni," "The Theater Manager," "The Magic Flute," Haydn's "Astonishment" Symphony, and others, and ends with music from the Requiem. The music by Suppé is so skillful that it is difficult to tell where the music is by Mozart and where by Suppé. The narration is omitted from this disc, but the music is so skillful that it seems unnecessary to tell the story. This disc is a must for Mozart fans. The overture to "Travels in Africa" is also included. Naxos Japan
