Delius’s Early String Quartet Revived On this album, the focus is on the Delius works featured in the second half. These were composed during his student years; although he entrusted their premiere to Sinding, the scores were likely returned to the composer without ever having been performed. Disheartened, Delius treated the work as if it had never existed (reusing only the scherzo of the second movement in his “String Quartet” composed in 1917), and the first two movements of this piece were believed to have been lost. However, a score that appeared at auction in 2018 was identified as this very work. After collation and editing, it was reconstructed as a four-movement work and premiered by the Villiers Quartet in a streaming concert in October 2020. This CD marks its first recording. This music offers a glimpse into the ambitious style of the young Delius, and fans of this composer simply cannot afford to miss it. Ethel Smyth is regarded as one of the most original female composers active from the late 19th century through the 20th century. While making a name for herself in the British music world—which was closed off to women at the time—she was also an enthusiastic advocate for the women’s liberation movement. This string quartet is a carefully crafted work: the first and second movements were written in the early 1900s, and the third and final movements were added a decade later. It possesses a sense of unity that belies the ten-year gap, and is a bold work with a touch of playfulness in which the viola—an instrument she loved—takes center stage.
