Description:
The British composer Edward Elgar, known for works such as “Salut d’Amour,” performed as a violinist in his youth, but he also served as organist at St. George’s Catholic Church in his hometown of Worcester; for him, the organ was one of the instruments indispensable to the development of his musical foundation. Centered on the “Organ Sonata No. 1,” composed in 1895, this album features all of Elgar’s original works for organ, along with arrangements by Elgar himself and by four prominent contemporary organists. The Organ Sonata No. 1 was commissioned by organist Hugh Blair, a close friend of Elgar’s, when a group of American church musicians visited Worcester. It is a symphonic work that makes full use of a diverse range of timbres, and some of its themes are said to resemble those of the cantata *The Black Knight*, which Elgar dedicated to Blair. Elgar’s friend Ivor Atkins suggested that Elgar arrange the “Severn Suite” for organ, but Elgar did not undertake the arrangement, so Atkins took it on himself.
