In 1841, Adam achieved great success with *Giselle*, which premiered in France. The following year, he created *The Beautiful Daughter of Ghent*, which, unlike his previous work featuring fairies and fantastical worlds, told an extremely realistic story centered on Beatrice, a young woman living in Ghent, and her fiancé, Benedict. Based on a libretto by Saint-Georges for *The Beautiful Daughter of Pelt*, this ballet follows Beatrice, who falls for a marquis despite being engaged to be married; her father, who tries to bring her back; and the marquis, whose attention is drawn to another dancer and who uses Beatrice as collateral for his debts— These characters set off a series of tragic events… That is the plot. Although the ending somehow turns out to be a happy one, the audience must have been on the edge of their seats. Adan’s music is brimming with radiant melodic beauty. Naxos Japan
