Description:

The album features the stage music of the young Maierbeer, whose operas such as "Robert the Devil" and "The Huguenots" are well-known. Born into a wealthy family in Berlin, Maierbeer showed early signs of musical talent and quickly gained fame as a pianist. A turning point came when, at the urging of his teacher Salieri, he went to Italy in 1816 and was inspired by the works of Rossini. The following year, in 1817, he achieved early success with his work "Romilda and Constanza. The works on this album, including the aforementioned overture to "Romilda and Constanza," date from the end of Maierbeer's teens and early twenties, and among them is the ballet music "The Fisherman and the Milking Woman, or the Riot of the Kiss," which is considered his first stage work. Although no detailed scenario has survived, Maierbeer has set the Rococo pastoral tale to 22 lively pieces of music reminiscent of Mozart. These include everything from pastoral songs to hunting scenes, as required by the ballet divertissement of the time. The overture to the opera "The Admiral, or The Lost Process" is thought to have been written in collaboration with Georg Josef Vogler, under whom Maierbeer studied after leaving Berlin, and features the unusual instrument "straw fiddle" (wooden harmonica). Also included is the overture to the opera "Brandenburg Gate" (not performed during Maierbeer's lifetime), which, like "The Master and His Guest," is also in German. Dario Salvi, whose work in this field, including a collection of overtures by Aubert, is outstanding, conducts. Naxos Japan
