Composer Vanhal was born in Bohemia. After working as an organist and church music director in his hometown, he obtained a patronage and went to Vienna to study composition under Dittersdorff, and traveled around the world to broaden his knowledge. An accomplished violinist, he is known to have played string quartets with Mozart, Haydn, and Dittersdorff. His works were so admired throughout Europe at the time that music historian Charles Burney reported that "Vanhal's symphonies are more widely known in England than Haydn's symphonies. This album includes three symphonies and the "Oboe Concertino," in which the oboe is in exquisite dialogue with the compact ensemble. NAXOS began a series of recordings of Vanhal's symphonies in 1998.A fourth collection had been released by 2008 with different conductors and orchestras, and this time the Czech Chamber Orchestra Pardubice and Michael Halász, two of the Czech Republic's leading chamber orchestras, performed the work.
