A collection of violin sonatas by Noskowski and Żelęński, two composers active in the Polish Nationalist School in the late 19th century. Noskowski, known primarily as a symphonic composer, wrote a Sonata in A minor—a majestic work that evokes the influence of Beethoven’s “Kreutzer Sonata” and Brahms. Opening with a striking unison at the beginning of the first movement, the violin and piano weave together a flowing melody. The second movement is written in a variation form that seems to follow the model of the “Kreutzer Sonata,” while the third movement unfolds with passionate music driven by a lively tarantella-like rhythm. Jerenski is a composer known for the opera *Janek*, which incorporates Polish folk music, and was also widely active as a teacher. This violin sonata, composed around 1879 during his mature period, unfolds eloquent music while adhering to traditional stylistic conventions: a lively first movement, a second movement with a mazurka-like rhythm, and a passionate third movement introduced by a leisurely introduction. The performance is by Lorons Kayalei, a Swiss violinist known for his recordings of violin sonatas by Rah and Metner. The tone produced by his 1742 Pietro Guarneri is truly captivating. Naxos Japan
