The Vasari Singers, one of Britain's leading choral ensembles, was founded in 1981 by conductor Jeremy Backhouse, and since then has been enchanting audiences with its extensive repertoire of modern works. In 2008, the ensemble commissioned Gabriel Jackson to perform the Requiem, which was recorded for the NAXOS label (8.573049) and reached #5 in the UK Classical Charts. The theme of this album, produced to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the ensemble's founding, is "Stars. The majority of the pieces selected by Backhaus from the many modern and contemporary choral works are by British composers with whom they are familiar, but they have also chosen beautiful works by Latvian composers Esenwalls and Duprat, and works by three female composers, Weir, McDowall, and Roxana Panufnik, to add diversity to the program. the program is diverse.
