Perhaps the "least known" area of Beethoven's many works is the series of canons and witty vocal ensembles on this album: among these short pieces, more than 50, are the two-part canon written for Hummel in 1816, the tavern written on various occasions, including the four-voice canon for Count Lichnowsky, "My dear Count, you are a good-natured fellow," and "Kuhl, nicht lau cool, not too hot (Kuhl's name is woven into the piece)," written when he met Kuhlau in 1825. Unlike the image of Beethoven that is generally associated with sternness, these pieces are all smiling and intimate.
