Description:
A collection of modern British chamber works with viola. York Bowen, a London-born composer who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later taught. He himself played horn and viola, and is said to have preferred the sound of the viola to that of the violin. Inspired by the virtuosity of Lioness Turtis, she wrote several works for him and also served as his accompanist. The powerful and instrumental "Rhapsody for Viola and Piano" on the album is considered one of his most important works. Imogen Holst, whose father, Gustav Holst, is primarily known as an arranger of his father's works, also worked with Benjamin Britten and served as artistic director of the Oldborough Music Festival from 1956. Her talent as a composer is on full display in "Four Easy Pieces" and "Duet for Viola and Piano." Britten's "Waltz," originally for violin, is performed here in a viola version, a scathing parody of the Vienna Waltz by a composer in her twenties. The viola player, Yue Yu, was selected as one of the "CLASSIC FM Rising Stars" in 2022. She has won numerous competitions and is currently pursuing further studies at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg. Naxos Japan
