This album in the Complete Piano Works of Liszt is a collection of works from the field in which Liszt excelled most: piano arrangements of operas and incidental music by composers of his own generation. One of them, Eduard Lassen, was a Danish-born composer. Liszt recognized his talent and even went so far as to recommend him as acting court conductor at the Weimar court at the time, urging him to conduct his own operas. The series of “Faust” compositions by Lassen enjoyed great popularity at the time, and Liszt arranged some of these pieces for piano. Furthermore, Hebbel’s *Die Nibelungen* is a play that premiered in 1861; Lassen composed 11 pieces of music for the play, including the overture, and Liszt arranged two of them. List’s arrangements here possess a subdued elegance, without resorting to the flashy virtuosity of his younger days. The arrangements of works by Donizetti, Weber, and Mendelssohn in the second half are brilliant pieces that truly showcase List’s genius. In particular, his “Wedding March” displays a unique flair in its use of dotted rhythms. Born in Belarus in 1990, Ivanov has crafted a smart interpretation of this piece with his refined sense of rhythm. The two fragments included with the album are likely works from Liszt’s early years.
