A rare work makes its debut in honor of the 2020 Beethoven Year. Beethoven composed the incidental music *King Stephen* in 1811 for the opening of a grand theater built in Budapest at the behest of Austrian Emperor Franz I. Depicting Stephen I, who founded the Kingdom of Hungary in the year 1000, this work begins with a festive overture, and through chorus and spoken dialogue, portrays the king’s heroic deeds as he battles the advancing enemy. Although set to magnificent music, it has rarely been performed since then and has become a “little-known work,” with only the overture occasionally performed today. Other works include music Beethoven composed for Leonore Prohaska—who disguised herself as a man to enlist in the army, served with distinction, but lost her life in battle—as well as as well as music celebrating the “Congress of Vienna” held in 1815. These heroic and spectacular choral works can be heard in a performance by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and the Turku chamber choir “Key Ensemble,” conducted by Leif Segerstam. Naxos Japan
