Description:
Clementi, a composer of the same generation as Beethoven, left numerous piano pieces. His piano sonatas alone number 100, and are so well written that even Beethoven appreciated them. Today, however, his sonatinas and exercises are used only for educational purposes, and the variety of works he left behind is almost unheard of. This album focuses on Clementi's variations. Of particular interest is a collection titled "Musical Characterizations," which is composed of pieces that skillfully depict the styles of Haydn, Kogelf, Mozart, and other composers active at the time. The theme and 21 variations on it, titled "Black Joke," were very popular at the time he was active in England. The fortepiano played by Nicholas Rimmer on this album is an original made in Clementi's own workshop around 1806. Naxos Japan
