Although Schubert is known as the king of song, he also left a great number of piano pieces throughout his short 31-year life. The waltzes, German dances, and other pieces were mostly written down based on impromptu performances in front of his friends, and are accessible to anyone who knows how to play the piano. On this disc, the German dances are varied with Lentler (a country-style dance in three beats) and Ecossaise (a dance of Scottish origin). Pianist Liu Yang plays a Steinway and a replica of an 1820s fortepiano, adding variety throughout the album. Track 16 is a combination of several drafts. For the unfinished pieces, Liu Yang himself has made supplementary notes. Naxos Japan
