Description:
Although Schubert's "Arpeggione Sonata" is often played on the cello today, it was originally written for the arpeggione, a six-stringed instrument invented by the Viennese instrument maker Johann Georg Stauffer around 1823. However, by the time the work was published in 1871, the instrument itself had fallen into disuse, and it became commonplace to play the piece on an alternative instrument; since the mid-20th century, this instrument has been reissued, and there have been more opportunities to actually hear the piece played on the arpeggione. In this album, cellist Alexandre Rudin, who studied under Daniil Safran, skillfully handles the arpeggione and weaves a unique nuanced tone. In the Piano Trio, Rudin switches to cello, and together with Hebart (a member of the Mosaic Quartet and concertmaster of the Vienna Konzentus Musiks) on violin and Hakkinen on fortepiano, they perform Schubert's late great works with great dignity.
