Description:
Born in St. Petersburg, Kabalevsky disobeyed the teachings of his mathematician father and decided to become a musician. 1925 he entered the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under Myaskovsky and began his career as a composer. From his early compositions, Kabalevsky showed a mature style, and his "Piano Concerto No. 1," published in 1928, was an international success, making for a smooth sailing start. He was praised as "the leading composer of the Soviet Union" until his death. This album contains two symphonies. Symphony No. 1 commemorates the 15th anniversary of the "Russian Revolution," and Symphony No. 2, written two years later, was also highly acclaimed and widely popular, with its American premiere in 1942 under the baton of Toscanini. Also included are the overture to the opera "Cora Brunion," based on a play by Romain Rolland, and two orchestral works, the overture to "Pathetique," written in 1960, allowing the listener to enjoy Kabalevsky's music from various periods.Darrell Ahn, the conductor of this album, is a Singaporean who won the first prize at the 50th Besançon International Conducting Competition held in 2007, as well as the Audience Prize and the Orchestra Prize. He is a graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music, where he graduated at the top of his class in conducting, and he gives a magnificent performance full of empathy that is uniquely his own.
