Fikret Amirov (1922–1984) was one of the most prominent classical composers in 20th-century Azerbaijan, and—as can be heard on the previously released collection (8.572170) , he is known as the first composer to incorporate the traditional Azerbaijani folk melody “mugham” into orchestral works. This album features “In Memory of Nizami,” composed in 1941 to mark the 800th anniversary of the birth of the ancient Islamic poet and philosopher Nizami (1141–1209), as well as the suite “One Thousand and One Nights.” In “In Memory of Nizami,” the figure of the great poet is expressed through leitmotifs, lending a sense of unity to the entire work and resulting in a mysterious and powerful composition. “The Thousand and One Nights” was originally composed as ballet music and later rearranged into a suite. While it exudes a fantastical atmosphere reminiscent of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” the alluring dance pieces—skillfully woven into key sections with masterful use of percussion—serve as strong accents. This recording allows listeners to fully enjoy the richly colorful orchestral sound that is characteristic of Amilov, who was also a master of film music.
